About Me
I write and edit, read and review.
Currently, I am Editor of Open Field iPad magazine, reviewer for Radio National's Book Show, and freelance writer for print and web when life allows.
I'm also writing a novel and am grateful to be working on this with a mentor through the Wired Writing Studio at the Banff Centre.
For four years (ending November 2011), I worked as the Senior Writer and Copywriter for Aesop. I've also worked as a book editor, for companies including Text, Penguin and D.W. Thorpe, and as a magazine sub-editor.
I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my partner Dave (The Royals) and two sons.-

Day One in Banff
It takes a while for your mind to calm, settle and regain focus after a long flight. The body recovers before the head does, and I don’t think it’s just the lack of sleep (I stayed awake throughout my 25-hour … Continue reading

Three Police and a Birthday
I heard the word ‘police’ three times on my birthday this year. I thought I was done with that. The first mention was my fault. A colleague asked me what I’d done for my previous birthday after I mumbled something … Continue reading

Writing Without Vipers
Fourteen days until I fly to Canada to begin a two-week writing course in Banff and I’ve done no work on my manuscript in months. None. This troubles me enormously but I can only see scraps of time between today … Continue reading

Time and Place
Today, on the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I had the same choice every other Western person did. Pay heed or ignore. I decided to listen to what was being said about 9/11 since it seems to me this … Continue reading

Fresh Air Online
I don’t think I was the only one who was surprised by Meanjin’s new website, which went up today. Literary magazines are in a bad way in Australia. There aren’t many of them, and the few that have survived are … Continue reading

On Persistence
Years ago, at Queensland University, I made a friend called Kriv. He was, and remains, the nicest person you could meet. At a time when we small-city kids were trying to look like we spent our days drifting from London … Continue reading

McSweeney’s Columnist Competition
McSweeney’s Internet Tendency has just launched it’s third columnist competition. This is an awesomely great opportunity that I probably won’t take (time), but maybe one of you will.
